Is the main aim of blockbusters to make money by providing a film that can appeal to most people for largest audiences or an amazing film to intice mutliple viewing and word of mouth to increase audience??

I have been thinking about this and it is obviously the first option ( leaving the second option open for independent and cult cinema), even better for the worst certificate invented - 12A - because you get parents and kids obligated to go together.
Talking of blockbusters, I saw Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen and I'm not sure whether it was really good or if I was just caught up in the Bayhem of it all.
The plot, as a friend recently pointed out to me, is actually rather weak and certain parts really farfetched. Maybe it's my bias towards the characters ,actors/actresses and the whole franchise that keeps me fascinated with this action packed (nearly overloaded) sequel.

But it is certain that the first is better, and the second a good follow on. Although they have left if open for a third installment I'm not sure if I'm as excited about the idea of that as I was about hte 2nd one.
